Okay, the big dummy having problems again.

I've just downloaded a huge program that consists entirely of htm documents. When I click on the main file (htdb.htm), it opens Word 2003 and displays correctly. I am supposed to be able to ctrl-click on any of the links on the page and be taken to another htm document. But I get an error message in Word that says there's no program registered to handle this kind of file.

I went to My Computer/Tools/Folder Options and checked to see if htm files were associated with Word. It all looks okay.
1. Is there a setting in Word that needs to be tweaked? I've looked all over and can't find one.

2. Is there a better option for displaying a series of linked htm files? Something smaller than word, no editing necessary, only viewing?
Open Office was one option, but it's just too big.
Thanks!

That's what I'm thinking...
curious as a cat,

I'm wondering if I missed some crucial bit of information. . .

Yes, Susan, you missed the point that I'm stupid <grin>.
I seem to remember some freeware programs that let you compile multiple htm files into an executible. I don't recall how many pages the freeware versions can take; this has hundreds.

I may be way off but I'd be curious as to what the OP had under My Computer, Tools, Folder Options, File Types, HTML and HTM. It sounds like the "Open With" is set to Word somehow instead of Internet Explorer or other browser of choice.

Indeed, it is set to Word.
An easy way to correct this is the old Shift+RightClick trick.. Then you just select "Open With" and grab Internet Explorer from the dropdown. There's a checkbox that says "Always use this program to open this file type."

Don't know if that will help but if a user called me reporting that problem, that would be hte first place I'd look.
John H.

Thanks! I didn't know about the trick.

Replying to myself here:

Doing a little browsing, I found this program:
http://www.spadixbd.com/wsz/

I had some doubts -- the total size of my htm files is >45 megs. Nothing in freeware has ever been able to handle that much data, in thousands of files. I downloaded it. It's perfect! If you're thinking of putting together a simple e-book, with a built-in browser independent of what's on the user's system, this is just great!

Now that is a very cool piece of software.

Yes, Susan, you missed the point that I'm stupid <grin>.

You just had a momentary lapse of attention (like looking all over the house for the car keys that are clenched in your hand or the glasses that are perched on top of your head). I think most of us have been there, done that. If we're luckier than you were this time, nobody ever knows.

ROTFLOL (oops, sorry about that). Wink

Susan

Actually, I've been a bit brain dead for a while. Can't keep things in my head longer than a second. Thanks to you, and others, I can usually get answers when I need them.

Oy.
