Online scanners, for obvious reasons, cannot be trusted since they rely on a system already up and running. If you're infected already such a scan means nothing.

.... and who can be certain that any given 'online scanning service' is not itself a trojan poking around in your data?

Eset, makers of NOD32 are one of the premier anti-virus companies. They and Kaspersky consistently rank among the top five in virus detection. Now whether an online scan is worth anything is debatable. I suppose if one uses popularly bundled scanners then they would be better off doing weekly scans with online ones.

Have you used this online filescanner: http://virusscan.jotti.org/ ..if so how would you rate it?

That is just a single file scanner. You submit the file and it uses various scanning engines to check it. There is another one similar to that - http://www.virustotal.com/ . They are certainly good services to help with any suspicions you have regarding a single file.
