I've seen lots of programs that will let you restrict which web sites your children can go to. Are there any programs that enable you to restrict accessing newsgroups with certain words in their title (if no freeware I'll take retail suggestions)?
Thanks in advance... Bob |

Usenet's really not a place for children, the only way you'll prevent them from seeing anything harmful is blocking them entirely from Usenet. |

Trying to censor what children see on usenet is fairly problematic. Even in a group with a benign title like "alt.comp.freewarwe" your kiddos will occasionally see language and links that would cause you to burst a blood vessel.
For starters, though, I'd restrict their access to a text-only (no binaries) free news server like motzarella or aoie.
Standard disclaimer applies, though. Kids will ALWAYS find a way around parental restraints. You did. I did. We ALL did. The best approach isn't software but effectivre parenting skills that teach children how to best cope with the world as it is rather than try to shelter them from it. |

Bob;
What are trying to restrict? Photo/media downloads? Warez? Or text? First thing that came into mind is edit the .newsrc file to contain only those groups which meet your criteria. Then you'd change the file to read-only and hidden.
But I don't know if MS OE follows that convention...

My understanding (my killfile prevents me being across a lot of what goes on!) is that there's quite a few hereabouts

Ideally, no downloads of course. I realize even benign groups such as this occasionally have idiots that feel they can't live without the most base language and racial slurs but we do what we can. Ideal if I could block access to newsgroups with certain words in their title I would be satisfied with that. I could create a list and I'd probably have to expand it as we went along. Hopefully in that way I could eliminate 75-80% of objectionable groups. Not perfect by any means but it would be a start. Many of the responses stated that there are ways to restrict group access but I don't recall seeing any examples of them.
Thanks... Bob |
