Hi gang --
I've been frustrated in looking on the freeware sites. Can anyone recommend an easy-to-learn-and-use freeware spreadsheet program similar to Excel?
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Open Office has what Microsoft Office has: http://www.openoffice.org/ Very good...and it can cross-platforms with MS Office.

If OpenOffice isn't what you're looking for, the last freeware version of Spread 32 does a pretty good job. Scroll down on this page:

I don't know if I helping with your frustration, there are some more choices. Gnumeric and Open Office Calc are the best I think. Also Thinkfree Office Online is pretty slick.

++Online Stand-Alone Spreadhseets++

* http://www.editgrid.com/home - An online spreadsheet featuring real-time-update and extensive collaboration features. Will import Excel, Lotus and OO.

* https://numbler.com/ - simple spreadsheet. Imports Excel.
* http://www.numsum.com/ - imports Excel.

* http://www.xcellery.com/ - Edit Excel files online. Does not seem to
be Firefox compatible.

++Freeware Stand-Alone Spreadsheets++

* http://www.abykus.com/ - Abykus - Impressive freeware.
* http://www.tucows.com/preview/395926 - cVue - Also impressive beta. Maker has put download availability on hold. Beta is still available on Tucows.

* http://www.woundedmoon.org/win32/kyplot.html - Kyplot 2.0 Beta - Spreadsheet ++, has extensive statistics, wave and mathematical function analysis abilities.

++Web Based Suites++

* http://www.thinkfree.com/common/main.tfo - ThinkFree Show (part of ThinkFree Office Online 3 Beta) - Try to load corrupt MS Office files here.

* http://us.ajax13.com/ - Ajax13 Office Suite - includes presentation (ppt compatible), spreadsheet (xls compatible) and word processor (word
compatible).

* http://www.goffice.com/ - try opening corrupt office files here. Spreadsheet and word processor work now, presentation app still to follow.

* http://www.zohoshow.com/ - Zoho Show (part of Zoho Office Group). Try opening corrupt Office files here.

* http://docs.google.com/ - Google Docs & Spreadsheets.
++Freeware Office Suites++

* http://n3t.net/Downloads/Win/ - Star Office 5.2 free version downloads (current version is like Sun Office 8 or 9).
*
http://groups.google.com/group/datarecoveryfreeware/browse_thread/thread/6a2ba130808f5196 - decent basic Word compatible Word processor and Excel compatible spreadsheet.

Do any of these spreadsheets work with or create Excel macros?

The Novell version of OpenOffice is supposed to work with many Excel macros. This is (slowly) being improved. I have not tested this myself.

Father Guido!

Is it really you?? I was a student in your Spanish class at the Five Minute University. ¿Como está usted?

You see, I still remember after all these years. Just as you predicted.

Your Faithful Student,
Caesar
