I'm dumping AVG. I upgraded to cable and I guess AVG doesn't recognize it. At least it won't on my puter. When I try to upgrade it again (it needs to be manually upgraded every month or two, even though it automatically updates every day), it says it can't find a dialtone. I've searched through every menu looking for some way to tell it that we're not doing dialup anymore, but no luck. It wants a dialtone. Not sure if it just doesn't work with broadband or just can't change over, but I'm tired of it quitting on me every month and wanting me to upgrade manually!

So, once again, I'm looking for suggestions. I searched the NG for something current, but couldn't find anything. What do some of you think is the best free low maintenance anti-virus software? And, hopefully, without getting to technical, why?
Thanks in advance!

If you use it avoid the optional tool bar during installation.

This one is for personal use, not limited to home users only. You very likely could use it in your office PC.

AOL Active Virus Shield is by far the very best of the freeware antivirus programs.

I'm running AVG on one of my computers so I checked the update configuration. Oddly, there is no option regarding which connection it uses, so I'm guessing it uses the connection settings in Internet Explorer properties. Are you using Windows XP? If so, when you switched to broadband did you change the default connection setting in Internet Explorer properties? I would set it to "never dial a connection". You could also remove the dialup networking adapter from the networking section of the device manager. Hope this helps.

If you decide to switch I would recommend AOL Active Virus Shield which is rebranded Kaspersky Antivirus 6 - just don't install the AOL toolbar (that is unless you actually want it).

Several months ago I dumped my (then) favorite antivirus app for Active Virus Shield and never looked back. It's actually Kaspersky branded by AOL. Very straightforward to use. (It requires you send an email address to get an activation password. I did it with spamgourmet without a hitch.)

I've also come to believe that a definition-based antivirus app gives me less protection than I want. In conjunction with AVS, I use Novatrix Cyberhawk for HIPS protection and several anti-rootkit apps.
And, of course, there are sandboxes.

Have fun on cable!

Thanks for all the replies. I should admit, that eventually I found the place in AVG to change over to LAN, but it was very well hidden. But it is very high maintenance, shutting down every month or two, saying it needs to be updated! I think it automatically updates the virus library daily, but when the app needs updating, it just sends a warning and shuts down until I go in and tell it to update. PITA! If they can update the virus library daily, without user intervention, why can't they update the app the same way?

I think I'm going to give the AOL anti-virus a try. I've heard before that it's very good, and now from a couple of you!
Thanks again!

I thought Comodo was a firewall, not an AV. I got rid of it, it was very high maintenance. I could barely do anything on the web without Comodo popping up and asking me if it was ok, sometimes for something I had already told it was ok. It's like an unhappy child, constantly needing attention, like AVG. Maybe it'll work better for you. Maybe they've improved it since I dumped it!
