Looking for a treepad type note taking application, preferably portable.
I didn't use this kind of applications till now, so I just don't know any. I saw one once, but just, can't remember it's name.
Anybody know any ?

All suggestions welcomed

There are at least two schools of thought on "portable" apps. The school I belong to is that if you can copy the program's directory and data files over to a new machine and it works, it's portable. OTOH, I understand the school that requires a portable app to either not make changes to the registry, or to clean up after itself if it does. Some people call those "green" apps, as in non-polluting the host computer.
For the average user, the first school is usually good enough. For the IT pro who works on the computers of paying customers, the second standard is probably more appropriate.

(Of course, a significant number of portable apps hava a EULA that says "free for personal use only," so IT pros have those concerns also.)

I belong to the second school although I'm far from being an IT pro. At work we're not allowed to use any other programs than those preinstalled, and it's controlled!
We're left to work in a webified database with XP and IE6sp1(!), Office2003 and Adobe 7.x(!), period. Sad

There's not a day I don't bless the authors of portable freeware. Smile

At work, I face similar restrictions, and I'd be inclined to wager your policies also prohibit the use of executables the way you're doing it as well. (Of course I'm guilty of the same thing! <g>)

Well, it's not clearly stated, and I'm not going to try to clarify the matter. Wink

I acknowledge the IT-personells need to control to keep the system stable and secure. However, I think we're many who sometimes wish they could show some tolerance for individual needs in order to increase productivity.

I am one of those "IT-personells" and I tell you - all it takes is one a$$hole on the network to mess it up for everybody. They whine about security but then download some rediculous piece of software that infects the network.

The people signing the checks for the security software only give a $hit about keeping their network secure if it inconveniences someone else. They buy the cheapest cr@p software they can get and let the IT security people twist in the wind because the cheap security software doesn't let IT and security admins make individual changes.

Then the check signers complain that we implement a security setting that is inconvenient for them. And when we get our jobs threatened if we don't change it, so we make the change, and then get it in the neck when the change is exploited and the end-user is again inconvenienced because of a network outage.

This reminds me of the woman who sued the police because she didn't lock her car and had her stereo stolen. Boo freakin' hoo.
Companies can either:

1: Invest in security software that actually allows for decent control AND workability.

2: Get behind IT attempts to educate users about computer security.
3: Let IT off the hook when the sheap security software they pay for doesn't stop some attacks.
