|
|
I decided to give AdAware 2007 a try and yes, it no longer allow you to do custom scans. It does have a few new features in exchange though.
OTOH it does, as others have pointed out, start a service running on your computer in the background.
I don't care what their excuse is, don't give a DARN, no way, no how! Especially when the program ISN'T EVEN RUNNING! I do NOT allow programs to add background services to my system unless I absolutely must have the program and the service is vital to its functioning. This is simply not the case with AdAware 2007. And the Ad Watch function doesn't even work unless you purchase either the Pro or Plus version of AdAware, so there is simply NO EXCUSE for this running process.
To shut it off, don't bother trying to use the Task Manager because if you do, the service will simply start again after a brief pause (IME).
Instead, you should do the following to prevent the service from autostarting in the first place (note that I'm using Windows XP Home SP2):
1. Open your Start Menu and select "Run..."
2. Type "services.msc" in the field (no quotation marks) 3. Press the "OK" button
4. Right click on the service named "Ad-Aware 2007 Service" and select "Properties"
5. Change the "Startup Type:" to "Manual" by selecting that option from the dropdown list
6. Left click on the "Stop" button, wait until the service stops 7. Click "OK"
Note that every time you start AdAware 2007 though, this service will be started in the background and you will need to stop it again. However, the next time you reboot the service should not be running because of the change you made.
I've contacted Lavasoft about this issue and invited them to participate in this thread. We'll see if they reply or not.
I will also say that if this becomes more of a problem (for instance, they modify their program so that it becomes impossible or at least more difficult to shut off the service) I will uninstall their AdAware 2007 and advise against using it.
I'm already not too happy with the way the program has so many non-functional buttons ("You need PLUS or PRO version to run this feature!") and consider AdAware 2007 to be a perfect example of PROmotionware that's too obnoxious. This service problem may be the straw that breaks the camel's back. |

I found this forum discussion:
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/index.php?showtopic=9632&st=0&p=44081&
In this thread, it's pointed out that the service is for real time support which is only provided by the Pro and Plus versions. So WHY is it running all the time when you only have the Free version?
I also found this excellent tutorial for doing exactly what I independently came up with:

When you get into the `services` John, dbl/click the item, and disable it.

You're right, double clicking on it is the same the as right clicking and selecting "Properties" in my instructions. |

Much appreciated. I found a-squared also runs a service despite being installed as on demand scanner! |
