|
|
I have a data CD that I legally bought. I want to make a copy of the CD.
However, when I do that, the computer recognizes it is not the "original"
CD. So far, I have tried Nero 6, CloneCD 5.3, and Alcohol 52. I was able to
create new CDs (in case of Alcohol, I created an image on my hard drive) but
the computer still refuses to run it from the copied CD. The issue is that
the program can somehow identify if the original CD is in the CD drive. Even
when I install the program (from the original CD) and then try to run it
while having the copied CD in the CD drive, it still won't run.
Thanks for any help. |

Create an *.iso image file of the CD. I use LC ISO Creator:
http://www.lucersoft.com/freeware.php
Then use your burning software to burn the *.iso file AS AN IMAGE. |

Thanks. I tried that (using LC ISO Creator and Nero - burn as an image). It still somehow recognizes that the copied CD is not the original.
Any other ideas ? |

What you're doing is a criminal offence in some countries, so you might need to be careful who you ask for advice.
There's a few different CD copy protections, which means that you'll need to try various methods.
You've mentioned the Off-Topic software Alcohol 120% - have you seen this website?

Do you have it in the same drive that was used when you installed the software? |

Some CD makers are using a very simple trick. They are writing to a 640MB disk. The disk that you buy these days are 700MB. Even though you are writing the ISO, it knows the disk is a 700MB rather than the 640MB type disk that it should be.
A friend of mine years ago told me his company was going to do that and I bought a bunch of 50 disk spindles of the 640MB disk before they went off the market in favor 700MB disk. Now I just check the properties of the disk and that tells me if I have to use one of the older type disk.
Ciao . . . C.Joseph

| With all due respect to the previous replies, the fastest way to clone unprotected cd/dvd's is to buy a 5.25" USB/IDE housing. Drop a second optical drive into it and copy the original disk wholesale. |
Or have two optical drives in the same computer, but the question is not about the fastest way to get the job done. It's also pretty obvious that the cd has some sort of copy protection on it. First job is to discover which copy protection has been used, Susan has posted a program that will do this.
Second job is to discover a program that will rip an image of the disk to the hard drive. Freeware suggestion-

Having the right burner is also an important part of the equation, with some copy protections.
