It's a good day for freeware lovers!

This version went through 4 public drafts and a fair amount of major additions were made right down to the wire. We can thank Microsoft for that. No, really: Thank you Microsoft.

Two big & bold features of GPLv3:

- Tivoization is now forbidden: Tivo uses GPL-licensed software in its appliances but then prohbits/prevents a user from modifying that software (hence the name). Just as importantly, this also extends to DRM by asserting the /ability/ to remove any DRM schema!
- Indemnification for all: MS sold patent indemnification "vouchers" to Novell (a promise not to sue Novell for Linux' 240 patent violations). The GPL3 authors noticed that the vouchers 1) were not dated and 2) were effectively viral. GPLv3 turned the MS-Novel deal into a universal indemnification!

Thank you Microsoft! And thank you Elf for reminding me to say something.

It might have been a good idea if the video avail for download was in one of the common formats. Nothing I've got recognises OGG Theora.

I believe this is not accurate. What Tivo does, AIUI, is use hardware to prevent users from running modified versions of the software on that hardware.
I agree with Linus that software licenses should attempt to control only software, not the hardware on which it runs. IANAL and am far from being an expert on any version of the GPL.
BTW Craig, what with you imbibing the PricelessWare (AKA Uber-Cool) Cult Kool-Aid and now the FSF Kool-Aid, you must be one besotted fellow! :0) -raincoater

If not on the same page, we're on the same chapter. Tivo only allows run that GPL software that carries a Tivo authorized digital signature. Whether that's hardware or s/w-based...dunno.

Funny. That makes two of us.

Just another duped, sheep-like, doe-eyed, lemming-styled minion I guess! But I'll let someone else decide that (& everything else) for me...
