I'm using Windows XP Home.

Are there any freewares that replace or enhance the command prompt?
I'd really like easy ways to cut and paste short text strings to / from that window.

Perhaps a really good, comprehensive, text about the command prompt supplied with WinXPH would be enough; I only recently learnt that you can use wild cards with the command prompt commands. (EG "cd d*" will change to the first directory beginning with d, which is a lot easier than typing documents and setting/etc. )

Change your CMD window defaults (via the System menu at the left title bar icon) to quick edit, insert, and autocomplete modes, then see what the mouse right click will do.

The built in help is not great but make yourself a list of available commands something like
help > c:\<some folder>\help.txt
or for an individual command
help attrib > c:\<some folder\attrib.txt

there is also a list of the commands + syntax at

There is a pretty good deal of potential within XP, as others point out. Here's some grazing materials:

For good help, go to Start, Help and Support, then search for Command Line Reference A-Z. Save as Favorite. This has help on all command line stuff and there some other good links in Help and Support too.
