Why do people have to announce that they no longer wish to visit this newsgroup. Who cares? Particularly a lurker whose existence no-one was aware of in the first place! What a drama queen!

As I've said recently, this newsgroup is an excellent place to learn about some awesome freeware programmes. If you don't like the arguing then quite simply don't read those threads - it really is very simple.

I just adapted it using the names / posting hosts etc

Ditto. It works well for me too.

Killfiling is a cinch, but I haven't been around here long enough to sort out the occasional flamers from the monomaniacs. What I'm after is a list of names that will effectively block the most egregious repeat offenders on both sides of the dispute while leaving enough useful discussion to make reading this group worthwhile.

Okay. I use Agent also (V4.2) and here's my killfile:
PERMANENT:

Author: Bear Bottoms (Ignore Subthread - I do not see replies) From: aafuss > babya* (Ignore Subthread)
Author: Tramp > Sedition (Delete - I see replies) Author: Andy Mabbett (Ignore Subthread)
Author: Peter Seiler (Ignore Subthread)
Author: <b__nice@hotmail.com> (Ignore Subthread) Subject: ^FWT (Delete)
Subject: SPAM (Delete)

TEMPORARY - Expire After 30 days of Inactivity:
Author: My Name <no@e-mail.com.invalid> (29 days left - Ignore) Author: Krazee Brenda > <info@sanibleone.com> (29 days left - delete) Author: michelleger1@gmail.com <michelleger1@gmail.com> (23 days left - delete)
Author: captab <vince@nrod.org> (6 days left - delete) Author: hedgehogman (13 days left - delete)
Author: iNcReDuLoUs <invalid@invalid.invalid> (29 days left - delete)
TEMPORARY - 30 days at a time - renew if necessary (I hope these two willl come around after a while because they have made useful contributions before this temporary insanity hit)
Author: hummingbird (13 days left on 2nd 30 day "timeout" - delete) Author: Franklin (13 days left on 1st 30 day "timeout - delete)
I sometimes use a temporary "Ignore Thread" with an expiration of 7-10 days of inactivity, on "Subject" keywords like "islam," "muslim," "israel," "pedophelia," etc., as necessary.

Beyond that, I use NewsProxy/Nfilter to filter Googlegroups posters and whitelist certain authors as follows:

* aflag:GG From: *author1*
* aflag:GG From: *author2*

....etc., which "tags" the author as "GGauthor1" and so on, but whitelists them and bypasses the NEXT filter, which is:
* flag:GOOGLER Message-ID: *googlegroups.com*
This puts "GOOGLER" in front of the subject line. I then use Agent's filter to ignore Subject: GOOGLER. I do see replies, so I generally don't miss much of value, but I filter out a TON of googlespam and other garbage.

Some other NFilter entries I find helpful:

* drop xref: *soc.culture*
* drop Message-ID: *news.UFF.edu*
* drop X-Newsreader: *sharkkilla*
* drop Message-ID: *news.dialog.net.pl*
* drop Message-ID: *progesis.net*

Using your real name and/or email address while posting to Usenet is moronic.

Is it? Gee, I must have made a *really* bad mistake all those years ago when I started posting to Usenet using my real address...
Of course, that was before e-mail or Usenet SPAM existed, so I suppose the moronic thing was that I didn't invent a time machine first and jump uptime time to learn about it and then go back and tell myself, "Self, don't use a real e-mail address when you post to Usenet." (Hmm, perhaps ....!munnari!no-one-here might have worked? No, I'm, pretty sure that sort of thing would not have been allowed back then.)
Also, any half-decent SPAM filter catches about 95% of SPAM, I get 200 or so SPAM messages trapped by Postini each week, and maybe 2 or 3 that get though, so it's only a problem if you are incompetent.
Cheers,
Gary B-)
