This is certainly *not* true. How about inserting the word "voting" into it so that the last part of the sentence reads "the voting readers of alt.comp.freeware"?

Perhaps you're thinking of web sites that allow visitors to "vote". alt.comp.freeware's Pricelessware selection process is more comprehensive than that. See:

The current wording of the Pricelessware slogan is: "The best of the best in Freeware -

That is fine. The wording as it stands makes no pretence of being inclusive of those whose free choice is not to participate in the Pricelessware ballots. Neither can it be denied that those who do participate (voluntarily, it is to be noted) in the ballots are alt.comp.freeware participants also - so the wording as it stands, "selected by alt.comp.freeware participants" is true regardless of the direction from which it is viewed.

I suppose. Although it sure sounds like the description automatically associates me with Pricelessware by virtue of my participation in alt.comp.freeware, I'm not going to nitpick further about the matter. It's not worth it to me.

You are wrong. It is false advertising. Furthermore, usenet is not intended for websites to claim or conduct website business within.

Hi Cheshire!

I'm in a similar situation to yourself because I've not taken any real part in selecting something as "Pricelessware" either.
It's been a long time but IIRC in all the time I have posted here I've nominated only one or perhaps two applications for Pricelessware and I may have voted for a couple of applications.

Now, I see that the Pricelessware slogan dose *not* say: "The best of the best in Freeware - selected
by ALL alt.comp.freeware participants"

So the original is quite truthful.

This reminds me that I posted an explanation of bare plurals using apples as an example to Mr Bottoms recently. <Fri, 13 Jul 2007> MsgID: <news:Xns996CE8B9380F28FCE1@127.0.0.1> Perhaps it got missed in all the posting that's been going on so here it is again.
====================== START QUOTE ======================
I opened the door accordingly and went in, and there was Moore seated by the fire with a basket upon his knees.

"Moore," I said, "do you have any apples in that basket?" "No," he replied, and smiled seraphically, as was his wont.
I decided to try a different logical tack. "Moore," I said, "do you then have some apples in that basket?"
"No," he replied, leaving me in a logical cleft stick from which I had but one way out.

"Moore," I said, "do you then have apples in that basket?" "Yes," he replied.

And from that day forth, we remained the very closest of friends.

You are wrong.

No, William, I am not wrong. I simply hold a differing viewpoint - which it seems you have great difficulty in acknowledging as being equally as valid as your own.

Surely you are not one of those people who only acknowledge two viewpoints - their own, and the wrong one?

Quote:
It is false advertising.

In precisely what way is it false?
If it comers to that, in what way is it advertising? It is simply a "slogan" which defines the nature of Pricelessware. No more than that. If you have a problem with that, then I suggest the problem is not with the wording, but with the interpretation.

Quote:
Furthermore, usenet is not intended for websites to claim or conduct website business within.

Since when were you in a position to pontificate on what Usenet is or is not intended for? It is simply your own opinion and will never be any more than that.

If you are so certain of your correctitude, why do you not arrange to have a neutrally-worded, neutrally-moderated ballot conducted on the issue and pledge yourself and your cabal to be bound by the results?

Well I didn't say that but it applies. Usenet was never developed for websites. It was developed for individuals to discuss the topic of the group. Not for websites to move in, conduct website business, and falsely claim that the group endorsed a website for the purpose of advertising the website or any other purpose. That the website advertises that it is developed by the readers of ACF is false, when it is a few website participants who do so in the group. That business should be conducted in the websites own forum. The disdain you show and lack of respect for this newsgroup by the behavior of those website participants towards others in the group and the noise created by the endeavor is wrong.

You learned about the "the fundamental founding principles of Usenet" in 1981, when Usenet was called bulletin boards and shopping was scarce? Wink

When your argument degrades to ridicule, you have admitted defeat. It is the only argument I see right now from the gang. You can't honestly defend your behavior so there is little recourse but to resort to ridicule. Not becoming.
